The evolution of Human Robot Interaction

Evolving HRI and what ARISE has to do with it.

Human-robot interaction (HRI) is a booming field aiming to bridge the gap between humans and robots, aiming for collaborative interaction, evolving from now parallel and isolated processes. Initially emerging in the 1990s, HRI has evolved into a multidisciplinary pursuit drawing from cognitive science, engineering, psychology, and more. Key attributes of HRI include autonomy, information exchange, technology adaptation, task configuration, and cognitive learning. The type of interaction, whether distance-based or physical, is also crucial. However, challenges persist, particularly in highly unstructured environments where mobility, communication, mapping, and situational awareness are paramount. The next steps in HRI involve overcoming linguistic barriers, enhancing communication for non-technical users, exploring natural language interfaces, and considering emotional and ethical aspects.

Starting in 2024 ARISE aims to revolutionize HRI through real-time, human-centric, open-source technologies. Collaborating with a diverse group of partners, ARISE seeks to address challenges such as collaborative robotics in disassembly, warehouse picking, assembly efficiency, adaptable interfaces, healthcare tasks, multimodal interaction, precision tasks, and worker ergonomics. By fostering collaboration among robotics experts, ARISE aims to advance technological components like ROS4HRI, facilitating the development of agile and sustainable HRI applications for the future.
